Abstract:

As the colossal movement of »modernism« in the 20th century bloomed, it dominated all aspects of human life. Literature too, faced a metamorphosis in the form of novel, and emergence of new ways in narration. The term «STREAM of CONSCIOUSNESS» was first used by the American psychologist «William James» in psychology, then entered the field of literature and became one of the modern narrative techniques. The present study has attempted to, first, give a brief description of the main features of the ‘STREAM of CONSCIOUSNESS’, and then, investigate those features in some of the STORIES written by the contemporary modern Iranian writer, 'Mostafa Mastoor'. In other words, the present paper tries to find the answer to the question of the possibility of classifying some of Mastoor’s STORIES under the title of "STREAM of CONSCIOUSNESS", as some critics believes. It should be noted that the term 'STREAM of CONSCIOUSNESS' is used for the STORIES having all or most of the features known for it. Therefore, the selected works of Mastoor's as samples do not mean that they are fully written under the rules of the ‘STREAM of CONSCIOUSNESS’, rather, they aim at probing the strength of its effects in these works.

Abstract:

The "STREAM of CONSCIOUSNESS" presents the psychological aspects of the characters of the story and refers to the whole area of CONSCIOUSNESS and emotional–psychological reaction, which begins from the pre–speaking stage and leads to the highest level, which is a distinctly logical stage. This article examines the STORIES, "Be Ky Salam Konam? " by Simin Daneshvar and "Shohar-e- Amrykaei" by Jalal Al-e Ahmad, both written based on a surreal style. In "Be Ky Salam Konam", the author represents the combination of first person point of view and direct internal monologue and writes about a lonely and oppressed woman and her thoughts, sorrows, and emotional–psychological reactions against her life events. In "Shohar-e- Amrykaei, " the author, in a dramatic monologue form, writes about the thoughts and memories of a westernized woman who has had an unsuccessful marriage with an American husband and tells her story to an unknown person and, at the same time, talks about social and political events of the time.

Abstract:

The text world theory is one of the theoretical frameworks in cognitive poetics studies which provides the context for the study of literary discourse through the analysis of conceptual structures. This theory was first presented by Paul Werth in 1999 and was mainly developed through the works of Gavins and Stockwell. The main problem of the current research is to explain some structures of this theory, i. e. world-building elements and propositions in the fluid style of the mind in three Persian STORIES, according to text world theory. by analyzing and comparing three STORIES in the mentioned format. This research tries to show how the structures of this theory work in creating space and moving between the spaces of the narrative text. For this purpose, the world-building elements including time, place, character and objects used in it, as well as functional advancing propositions and sub-worlds were analyzed. The findings of this research indicate that amount of functional advancing proposition of action-event which are actually more extensive are more noticeable. The sub worlds in the STORIES in the style of STREAM of CONSCIOUSNESS are more of the type diectic than the attitudinal and epistemic sub worlds.

Abstract:

In a STREAM-of-CONSCIOUSNESS novel, the author attempts to pave the way for his audience to encounter the characters’ mental experience directly. The characters’ mental content, which covers various levels of the mind and even reaches its pre-speech layers, is narrated within this variety of levels. Since connection of memories in the pre-speech layers of the mind occurs through association, one of the methods used by writers for showing the mentality of characters is association. In this case association becomes a device in the hands of writers for creating a link between the objective and the subjective world of the characters, in addition to depicting the constant flow of the mind from memory and a mentality, moving then towards another memory and mentality; finally depicting a picture and image which links to other related pictures and images too. This article is essentially concerned with the survey of association and its related features within the prespeech layers of mind, its quality in the STREAM-of-CONSCIOUSNESS STORIES, in addition to its correspondence with the mind’s mechanism. For this purpose, initially association and its governing rules are expressed, and then the significance of association in the narration of such fictions and its difference with recall is defined. Following this, the manners in which mentalities are offered in different methods of narration are surveyed through giving some examples from these fictions. The results of this research show that among different STREAMof- CONSCIOUSNESS novels, the method of inner monologue shapes associations more than other methods and develops through a high range of associations. Furthermore, utilization of recall of memories and mentalities in inner monologue counts as a weakness due to its contrast with the entity of the pre-speech layers existing in the mind.

Abstract:

STREAM of CONSCIOUSNESS is one of the modem and common modes of narration in novels. This technique is of great importance among narrative techniques for it undertakes to reproduce the flow of the character's mental process. Here, the reader is not exposed to the speech of other characters, in fact he enters inside the mind of the character, as if the thoughts an feelings of the. character is his own' s. Tharwat Abaza has exploited this technique III different ways and has demonstrated a remarkable delicacy in the art of writing. This study aims to depict the nature of the STREAM of CONSCIOUSNESS, its importance in the structure of Abaza's novels, and the way he has represented the overall state and process of CONSCIOUSNESS in a character.

Abstract:

"STREAM of CONSCIOUSNESS" is one of the modern techniques for narrating a story which has been of particular notice to the story writers, especially in the last century. This method is one of the most prominent methods in narrating a story and writing psychological novels, but despite what might be imagined by some of the readers of this article, this technique differs with "inner whisper" and "mental analysis" techniques. Actually the first psychological STORIES, or in other words the initial appearance of these STORIES was in the form of "inner whisper" which gradually developed and later on found its form as our discussion conveys in both story form and modern novels. This article makes an" attempt to offer a clear and precise definition of this technique, while it discusses its methods and characteristics, added to the basic principles and the psychological principles of the related technique.

Abstract:

This article aims to analyze the novel "the Symphony of the Dead" by Abbas Maroofi Sabet, and prove that it has been composed in a STREAM of CONSCIOUSNESS style, and that it deals with the unconscious layer of peoples thought prior to speech, which at first sight makes it seem ambiguous, disorderly in incidents and chaotic in time, place and grammatical rules. Using internal soliloquy, the first person narrative, and the full omniscient point of view, the author portrays different layers of the characters unconscious mind and internal life. Like the novel, the article ends in a STREAM of CONSCIOUSNESS fashion.

Abstract:

Before it is considered as a technique in the modern fiction, the "STREAM of CONSCIOUSNESS" was a psychological term used by the American psychologist, William James, on how the formation of memories, thoughts, dreams and emotions of humans occur. Later, authors who based their works on human mind paid attention to his inner world of thoughts and personal emotions; using these ideas, they accomplished the STREAM of CONSCIOUSNESS as a form of story writing. The fields of this method generally include human’s mind and mental reality, modes and manifestations of inner life and true Self, such as thoughts, feelings, fantasies and dreams. Also, the sensing time (non-chronological), which is an inner and ring time, as well as a complex language that is different from the everyday language are of the characteristics of this approach in story writing. Nezami’s "Haft Peykar" (Seven Bodies), in the realm of fiction, is interpretative from different perspectives throughout which human’s original experiences are completely explained and his inner life with all its deeds and manifestations are noticed. Different faces and various voices of a human being, a human’s spiritual contradictions being overcome by the assistance of the inner creative forces, connection of conscious and subconscious, subjective and objective, reality and dream, confusion of time and so on are among the outstanding manifestations of the STREAM of CONSCIOUSNESS in this book. In the present paper, relying on some of the elements of the STREAM of CONSCIOUSNESS and highlighting them, we have made an attempt to deal with Nezami’s “Haft Peykar” and tried to offer a new approach to this story.
